SAP Software Testing

What Is SAP Software Testing?

SAP software testing is an ongoing process and requirement for any business using SAP ERP software.

Most SAP ERP software contains default modules. These default modules need to be tested and customized to ensure they meet business and user needs. Without proper testing, the software and SAP project is likely to fail or be rejected by users.

Ongoing testing is required to accommodate regular updates, including implementations and resolving bugs.

Developers may test SAP software to achieve a number of goals ranging from performance, security, and user experience to integration testing.

Testing Modernization and Trends

Today, testing SAP software is a complex function for a number of reasons. For one, SAP has accelerated its product roadmap with new and enhanced functionality released on a near quarterly basis. Second, most SAP customers are integrating their SAP solutions with non-SAP applications. And third, the deployment of these solutions on multi-cloud and hybrid environments further adds complexity to the testing equation.

According to SAPinsider’s Change Management and Testing for SAP Benchmark Report, a majority of respondents said they are only partially satisfied with how their testing is meeting their business requirements.

Respondents (60%) also cited integration complexities as a major challenge for both testing and change management. “Orchestrating development, testing, and change across a complex, integrated landscape involving several teams, technologies, and compliance requirements is understandably a mammoth challenge,” writes Deepa Salem, Vice President and Research Director at SAPinsider.

To combat the challenges identified by the SAPinsider community, Salem recommends the following:

  • Develop an enterprise-wide change management and testing strategy.
  • Consider integration across applications and data early on in your implementation planning.
  • Improve collaboration among IT teams and between IT and business.
  • Build expertise to deploy agile/DevOps frameworks.
  • Deploy relevant testing tools to enable rapid testing, reuse of testing artefacts, and automation.

Testing Tools for SAP

Salem’s research reveals that more SAPinsider organizations are using end-to-end process testing platforms, including business-focused apps (53%), SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Cloud (50%), SAP ECC or SAP Business Suite (47%), and SAP Fiori (46%). User-experience testing is also being utilized at high levels.

Adoption of test automation is increasing, and artificial intelligence and machine learning are being applied in some cases to SAP S/4HANA and business intelligent applications.
