What Is SAP Software Testing?

Testing Modernization and Trends

Today, testing SAP software is a complex function for a number of reasons. For one, SAP has accelerated its product roadmap with new and enhanced functionality released on a near quarterly basis. Second, most SAP customers are integrating their SAP solutions with non-SAP applications. And third, the deployment of these solutions on multi-cloud and hybrid environments further adds complexity to the testing equation.

According to SAPinsider’s Change Management and Testing for SAP Benchmark Report, a majority of respondents said they are only partially satisfied with how their testing is meeting their business requirements.

Respondents (60%) also cited integration complexities as a major challenge for both testing and change management. “Orchestrating development, testing, and change across a complex, integrated landscape involving several teams, technologies, and compliance requirements is understandably a mammoth challenge,” writes Deepa Salem, Vice President and Research Director at SAPinsider.

To combat the challenges identified by the SAPinsider community, Salem recommends the following:

  • Develop an enterprise-wide change management and testing strategy.
  • Consider integration across applications and data early on in your implementation planning.
  • Improve collaboration among IT teams and between IT and business.
  • Build expertise to deploy agile/DevOps frameworks.
  • Deploy relevant testing tools to enable rapid testing, reuse of testing artefacts, and automation.

Testing Tools for SAP

Salem’s research reveals that more SAPinsider organizations are using end-to-end process testing platforms, including business-focused apps (53%), SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Cloud (50%), SAP ECC or SAP Business Suite (47%), and SAP Fiori (46%). User-experience testing is also being utilized at high levels.

Adoption of test automation is increasing, and artificial intelligence and machine learning are being applied in some cases to SAP S/4HANA and business intelligent applications.
