SAP HEC

What is SAP HEC?

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (SAP HEC) is an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering that is provided by SAP and is targeted at SAP applications. The difference between the SAP HEC offering and other IaaS offerings is that it is a complete managed service in which SAP provides both the infrastructure as well as all management and support of the environment. It is also designed specifically to support the SAP Intelligent Enterprise. While data centers for SAP HEC were initially either SAP owned or co-located, SAP now provides a choice of data center options including that of hyperscalers.

The focus of SAP HEC is applications powered by SAP HANA, and includes a reference architecture for this environment backed by specific SLAs. This includes SAP S/4HANA as well as SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP BW/4HANA). However, organizations must bring their own existing SAP HANA licenses to be used with any applications that they are running on SAP HEC. To streamline and facilitate the transition to SAP HEC, SAP provides assessment and onboarding services to ensure that appropriate planning occurs for the required capacities and services.

Aspen Moves to SAP S/4HANA While Protecting Data. Aspen Pharmacare recently selected SAP HEC as the infrastructure platform for their recent SAP S/4HANA deployment. Part of the reason for the decision was that they were looking to modernize infrastructure to improve both productivity and regulatory compliance, but their existing on-premise infrastructure was inadequate for SAP S/4HANA. A major concern for the organization was ensuring that SAP HEC provided adequate data security and sufficient privacy to meet their needs as a pharmaceutical company.

SAP Workloads Are Moving to the Cloud. As SAP workloads continue to move to the cloud, SAP HEC is a means of achieving that goal. Often used with the SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP’s platform for deploying, integrating, and extending cloud-based application, SAP HEC is a managed service environment that many SAP customers are choosing. This may eventually extend to RISE with SAP, which is being viewed by many as an extension of the infrastructure platform initially offered by SAP HEC.
