Cybersecurity Threats and Challenges to SAP Systems 2024

The threat landscape for SAP systems continues to expand. Ransomware and malware attacks are increasing in frequency and, even if not directly targeting SAP systems, often affect connected systems or environments. For SAP customers, a more more concerning issue is the increase in social engineering or credential compromise attacks, which, if successful, can expose valuable data within SAP systems. Consequently, SAPinsiders have identified addressing system vulnerabilities as one of their most critical needs. Despite the increase in attacks across the corporate landscape, this year respondents said that unpatched systems were the biggest cybersecurity threat to their SAP environments. This continues a trend seen over the last three years where an inability to keep up with patches and updates is creating vulnerabilities in SAP environments.

This year SAPinsider asked respondents to about the factors driving their cybersecurity strategy, the challenges faced in securing SAP systems, concerns with using cloud-based environments, who is responsible for managing the security of their SAP systems, security expectations from cloud providers, and planned areas of investment. While securing SAP systems has always presented a challenge, the growing complexity of the enterprise landscape due to accelerating cloud adoption is stretching security teams. Many organizations are using between three and six different cloud providers, and have significant concerns when it comes to using cloud-based systems. While not all of these concerns may have been realized, organizations need to ensure that they take the time to train internal teams to effectively support these environments.
