Enterprise architects running SAP HANA on hyperconverged infrastructure have long navigated a structural trade-off: the operational simplicity of HCI came at the cost of rigid, coupled scaling. When storage needs grew, organizations were forced to purchase additional compute nodes they did not need. For SAP S/4HANA environments, where in-memory databases demand massive RAM alongside independently scalable persistent storage for data tiering, backups, and disaster recovery, that coupling created both financial waste and architectural friction.
That constraint is now changing. At the recent NEXT Conference in Chicago, Nutanix and NetApp announced a strategic integration that connects the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) and its AHV hypervisor directly to NetApp ONTAP enterprise storage systems. The collaboration is designed to let customers scale compute and storage independently while preserving the streamlined operations of HCI.
Disaggregating HCI for SAP HANA
The partnership introduces a disaggregated HCI model specifically relevant to SAP landscapes. By integrating NetApp ONTAP’s data management capabilities with Nutanix’s hybrid multicloud operations, SAP customers can offload data management entirely to ONTAP while leveraging Nutanix AHV for virtualized compute. Since both Nutanix AHV and NetApp ONTAP are fully certified for SAP HANA production workloads, organizations can combine these technologies without running afoul of SAP’s stringent hardware requirements.
For SAP Center of Excellence (CoE) leaders managing large HANA databases, this disaggregated approach directly addresses the financial and operational friction of scaling SAP environments. Customers can preserve existing storage investments and avoid disruptive forklift upgrades when database footprints expand.
“Through our partnership with NetApp, customers will be able to simultaneously modernize their virtualization platform and tap into the power of Intelligent Data Infrastructure with NetApp,” said Tarkan Maner, President and Chief Commercial Officer at Nutanix. “We’ve partnered together so that customers can modernize at their own pace.”
Accelerating Hybrid Cloud Operations
The integration also speaks to the hybrid reality of modern SAP deployments. The joint solution includes the NetApp Shift toolkit and Nutanix Move, which facilitate data-in-place virtual machine conversions. For SAP Basis teams, NFS-based integration can streamline VM migrations, potentially reducing the downtime associated with moving heavy SAP S/4HANA workloads between on-premises and cloud environments from hours to minutes.
This resonates with broader industry trends. SAPinsider’s 2025 Cloud Architecture for SAP research found that 55% of respondents are adopting SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and 41% are transitioning to a cloud ERP solution like SAP Cloud ERP Private, while the “hybrid majority” is still eliminating technical debt and facing pressure to move more rapidly into the cloud.
Additionally, the SAPinsider ERP Migration and Transformation 2026 benchmark report noted that 32% of respondents are focused on deploying a flexible cloud-based or hybrid infrastructure that minimizes TCO and accelerates the compliant deployment of software instances. The ability to scale storage and compute independently, without forklift upgrades, maps directly to that requirement.
Cyber Resilience at the Data Layer
Security is another critical dimension. The joint solution incorporates NetApp ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with AI (ARP/AI) and the NetApp Ransomware Resilience service, designed to detect threats and exfiltration attempts in real time. Standardizing on ONTAP gives SAP security architects a unified framework for data mobility and cyber resilience across the hybrid landscape.
This matters in context. SAPinsider’s 2025 Cybersecurity Threats and Challenges to SAP Systems research identified data exfiltration attacks as the biggest threat to SAP systems, with 90% of respondents reporting a need for cybersecurity tools that provide consistent protection across cloud and on-premises environments. The Nutanix-NetApp approach of embedding data-layer resilience directly into the infrastructure addresses that requirement without adding standalone security point solutions.
NCP with NetApp AFF all-flash A-series and select FAS hybrid-flash systems will be available later in 2026, along with Cisco collaboration on FlexPod with Nutanix.
What This Means for SAPinsiders
SAP capacity planning should account for the disaggregated economics of compute and storage. SAP CoE leaders and enterprise architects planning hardware refreshes for large SAP HANA databases should model the cost efficiencies of scaling NetApp storage arrays independently from Nutanix compute nodes. Disaggregated HCI could fundamentally alter an organization’s ROI calculations by eliminating the need to purchase unnecessary compute capacity when expanding storage. Infrastructure teams should request joint Nutanix-NetApp sizing exercises for their largest HANA instances before committing to their next procurement cycle.
Hybrid migration timelines can compress with data-in-place VM conversion. SAP Basis teams managing phased SAP S/4HANA migrations across on-premises and cloud environments should evaluate the NetApp Shift toolkit and Nutanix Move for NFS-based VM conversions that reduce migration downtime to minutes. The ability to migrate heavy SAP workloads without extended outage windows gives organizations a practical pathway to modernize at their own pace rather than forcing disruptive cutover events.
Cyber resilience must be evaluated at the infrastructure layer, not just the application layer. SAP security architects should map NetApp’s integrated ARP/AI ransomware-protection capabilities within the Nutanix ecosystem against their data-protection mandates. With SAPinsider’s cybersecurity research showing that 90% of respondents demand consistent protection across cloud and on-premises environments, integrating autonomous threat detection directly into the storage layer represents a shift from reactive patching to proactive, infrastructure-embedded defense. Security teams should include the Nutanix-NetApp data resilience capabilities in their next SAP security architecture review.
