SAPinsider Buyers Guide: SAP S/4HANAThe transition to SAP S/4HANA remains a focal point for SAP ERP users. Since its debut, around 24,000 organizations have licensed SAP S/4HANA, with a slightly smaller number having deployed the solution. While SAP S/4HANA remains important, SAP’s strategic thrust over the past two years has been towards cloud ERP, underscoring the pivotal role of SAP S/4HANA Cloud. Supporting this strategy, SAP’s primary push has been for its subscription-based RISE with SAP offering, which includes both SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition, and SAP S/4AHNA Cloud, private edition. Yet, converting long-standing SAP users to this new cloud model, especially those with highly customized SAP ECC or SAP Business Suite deployments, remains a hurdle for SAP.
Despite the new innovations and faster performance offered by SAP S/4HANA and the cloud’s growing relevance, its uptake has been steady rather than rapid. Many in the SAP community are still on the fence regarding this shift. While some organizations have started their SAP S/4HANA journeys, a significant number of organizations have delayed deciding how they will move forward. However, the percentage without any plans to switch does continue to diminish.

Do You Suffer from a SAP S/4 Cloud Complex?When it comes to cloud adoption, there is something of a prevailing wind blowing towards the hyperscalers. As Gartner’s public cloud forecast illustrates, by 2026, 75% of organizations will adopt a digital transformation model predicated on cloud as the fundamental underlying platform, with much of this currently dominated by the big public cloud providers. The question is, will this last? While the COVID-19 pandemic had a lot to do with the acceleration in public cloud adoption, today there are new pressures on enterprises that are re-shaping cloud strategy in favor of the hybrid approach.
According to Olivier Frank, General Manager Data Solutions EMEA at HPE, the picture is becoming more complex. Many of those businesses that rushed to adopt public cloud from hyperscalers are now having to face up to the fact that mission critical apps, such as ERP, are better served through on-prem or co-location providers operating as-a-service platform models. Times have changed and this is being reflected in how organizations are now reevaluating IT infrastructure.
