What Is SAP Migration Strategy?

With the last major release of SAP ECC, version 6.0 EHP 8, made available in 2016, the question facing SAP customers is around the move to SAP S/4HANA. While SAP has extended mainstream maintenance for the ECC 6.0 platform until the end of 2027, with an optional premium maintenance available for an additional three years, those running these solutions need to decide on the move to SAP S/4HANA. The three biggest factors around this move are when they will move, and how they will move, and where they will move.

The when is a question that is up to each organization. However, with the majority of organizations taking between 12 and 18 months once the business case has already been made, the period before mainstream maintenance ends can approach very quickly. Once the decision has been made when to move, organizations must then determine what approach they will take to their SAP migration. Will they simply move everything as is into SAP S/4HANA? Will they start from scratch to produce as clean a system as possible? Or will they take an intermediate route? The last factor is where they will move. With most organizations moving SAP workloads to the cloud, this may be the route of choice. However, others will want hybrid environments or entirely local infrastructure.

Key Considerations for SAPinsiders

  • Understand what other organizations are saying about their SAP Migration Strategy. These include: 1) the fact that the biggest challenge is often building the business case, 2) moves to a new ERP system are both resource intensive as well as expensive, 3) newer versions of SAP S/4HANA include significant business benefits, and 4) the move to SAP S/4HANA represents a major opportunity to improve business operations.
  • Ensure that you have planned effectively for the migration. When migrating from your existing ERP system, there are important tips that you can follow to ensure that processes are successful. First, engage your business teams in the process. While this is an investment in resources, there will be more success with the overall project if your business teams are involved from the beginning. Second, remove unnecessary custom code. Limiting what you have to move forward will make the process much easier. And lastly, plan for a phased approach. You will want to have dry runs and even maintain both systems in parallel to ensure that they are working correctly.

Maximizing SAP RISE Benefits with OpenText SolutionsApr 15, 2024  —  The transition to cloud adoption presents several challenges for organizations, particularly in managing and integrating legacy SAP applications which are costly to maintain, difficult to access, and pose compliance risks. To migrate these systems efficiently and compliantly, businesses need an innovative and well-planned strategy. This includes ensuring that only essential, current data is moved to the cloud, while figuring out how to handle residual applications and data that still need to be accessible for compliance and operational reasons. OpenText offers solutions to these challenges through its InfoArchive service, which supports both structured and unstructured data. This service helps maintain data integrity, ensures secure lifecycle management, and allows compliant access to data, facilitating a smoother transition to newer systems like SAP S/4HANA. The InfoArchive process involves steps such as extracting data, analyzing legacy structures, and creating storage applications, all aimed at efficient archiving and decommissioning of old applications while ensuring data privacy and compliance. This approach not only addresses compliance and operational efficiency but also aims to reduce the financial burden of maintaining legacy systems in a cloud environment.

Partner
Partnering for a Successful FutureSep 14, 2023  —  Organizations need to prioritize innovation. Improving agility, ensuring resilience, and unlocking data-driven analytics across business operations are not only essentials for success and growth, but also prerequisites. However, most organizations approach their transformation projects traditionally, where either the project scope is narrow or a single target approach is adopted. For example, infrastructure renewals or applying sustainability goals. In fact, what they should be prioritizing is the bigger picture. Although traditional approaches often stem from budgetary constraints or a pressing need to replace legacy infrastructure, the failure to envision the bigger picture often derails successful transformations. Partners play a key role in SAP projects. They manage a range of tasks including business case formulation and strategy development to data cleansing, updating custom code, managing change, project management, knowledge sharing and education, and solution deployment. As more customers look to complete their transformation projects before the end of 2027 deadline, finding the right partner for a project is crucial, especially given the limited availability of partners with experience in deploying SAP S/4HANA and RISE with SAP. o Finding a partner to evaluate strategy across the organization is crucial. Fragmented projects result in delays and cost overruns. o The more informed customers are about their environments before the start of the project, the more likely they are to be successful. This can be as simple as a custom code evaluation, but embracing the entirety of the project and the organizational change it can bring is essential. o Involving business teams in the transformation process is vital to the success of initiatives beyond the deployment phase. Failure to do so may result in failure to see technology adopted post-implementation.
