Key Takeaways What you need to know
  1. SAP will embed Moody's supplier risk data in SAP Ariba, with general availability planned for Q4 2026.

  2. New Joule Agents for SAP's supply chain assistants will flag, resolve, or correct disruptions, depending on the process.

  3. SAP's own descriptions give agents more room to act in manufacturing and logistics than in supplier decisions.

Two announcements at SAP Connect on October 6 give SAP’s Joule Agents a role in handling supplier risk and supply chain disruptions. The first is a partnership that places Moody’s supplier risk data inside SAP Ariba, and the second adds new Joule Agents to SAP’s supply chain assistants. SAP’s innovation news guide lists both for general availability in Q4 2026.

The agents differ in how far they act. Some flag a problem and wait for a person, while others correct it on their own. Deciding which responses to hand over is the main choice customers face as these capabilities arrive, a step beyond the availability timeline SAP set out for Joule across the business.

Getting Disruption Signals Into the Workflow

Procurement teams typically check supplier risk in periodic reviews, using data gathered from separate tools and spreadsheets. When a problem surfaces that way, the chance to act has often passed.

The Moody’s partnership is designed to bring that review into the system where buyers already work. Moody’s data on supplier financial health, operational risk, and regulatory status will sit in SAP Ariba Supplier Lifecycle and Performance alongside supplier master data and performance metrics. That gives procurement teams a single supplier profile at the point of decision.

Supply chain planning gets a similar change. New agents in the Supply Chain Planning Assistant will sense and simulate plan exceptions in one workspace, turning alerts into decisions planners can review.

In both cases, the signal reaches people inside the system where they make the decision.

What the Agents Do Once They See a Problem

SAP describes different levels of agent action depending on the process. In procurement, if a Joule Agent detects a change in a supplier’s financial health or regulatory status, it can flag the supplier and surface alternatives. A buyer decides what happens next.

In planning, the agents go a step further. They resolve plan exceptions, and explainability features show planners what changed. In manufacturing and logistics, SAP says agents will detect plant-floor disruptions and make autonomous corrections. Agents will also optimize outbound warehousing, fulfillment, and transportation dispatching.

SAP cites one early result, from an unnamed producer of natural ingredients using the Logistics Assistant. The assistant turned a multistep troubleshooting process into a one-click resolution and helped the logistics team recover roughly one-third of the time it had lost to troubleshooting.

On the procurement side, an expanded partnership with ORO Labs adds an orchestration layer that connects procurement workflows across mixed enterprise environments. SAP has not given a date for it.

Where People Stay in the Decision

SAP states the procurement boundary directly: people set the boundaries, and Joule Agents handle the operational complexity within them. Its descriptions of manufacturing and logistics use stronger terms, including autonomous corrections and self-resolving problem management.

Customers describe the same balance. Christoph Buerki, head of procurement at Novartis, which is piloting a Joule Sourcing Assistant it co-developed with SAP, said the company wants AI agents “to handle the manual heavy lifting” so sourcing professionals can focus on strategy, supplier engagement, and value creation. Steve Hankins, chief financial officer of Morgan Foods, said the company’s advantage “will come from people on top of agents.”

Taken together, SAP’s own descriptions give agents more room to act in operations than in supplier decisions.

What This Means for SAPinsiders

  • Prepare supplier records before Moody’s data arrives. The Moody’s integration, planned for Q4 2026, places risk data alongside supplier master data and performance metrics in SAP Ariba. Teams that clean up those records first gain a single supplier profile buyers can rely on at the point of decision.
  • Match each process to its level of agent action. SAP describes agents that flag a problem and wait, agents that resolve exceptions with an explanation, and agents that correct disruptions on their own. Teams that map their procurement, planning, and logistics processes to those levels gain a clear view of where approval steps belong.
  • Set limits before operational agents go live. SAP’s descriptions give agents more room to act in manufacturing and logistics than in supplier decisions, while Novartis and Morgan Foods both stress keeping people in charge. Teams that set approval limits for autonomous corrections before Q4 2026 gain the control those customers describe.
