SAP Announces Joule for Developers 

Following the recent announcement of SAP Business Data Cloud, the partnership with Databricks, and the newly launched SAP Business Suite, SAP has announced Joule-powered AI capabilities for SAP Build Process Automation and SAP Build Apps. The goal of the new capabilities is to enhance developer productivity and allow developers of all skill levels to build more efficiently using AI-infused developer tools which leverage purpose-build, SAP-centric AI models. 

Joule for Developers can understand the intricacies of SAP development frameworks, anticipate developer needs, offer suggestions, and automate repetitive tasks. It will enable developers across low-code, pro-code, and automation projects to be more productive and efficient.  

Key capabilities of the offering include application creation, code optimization, and process and workflow optimization. In application creation, Joule will assist in generating code, user interfaces, data models, and sample data across SAP programming tools for Java, JavaScript, and ABAP. Code optimization features will provide code refactoring, unit test creation, and generate code explanations and summarizations. Process and workflow automation will enable the creation of automation workflows and business rules using natural language inputs, streamlining complex processes.

Understanding Joule for Developers

Joule uses purpose built large language models (LLMs) specifically tailored for SAP workloads such as the ABAP LLM. Joule will also provide real-time, context-aware support for code completion and optimization, as well as automation pipeline creation that understands the application environment, development project artifacts, and SAP-specific Syntax. 

Capabilities of these contextual LLMs include predictive code completion based on context, code explanations of code data services, AI-powered assistance for documentation and best practices, and workflow development and decision assistance based on API specifications and connected systems.  

Joule for Developers is just one of many announcements that SAP has made over the last year. This includes Joule in SAP Build Code, freestyle SAPUI5 and SAP Fiori app development using AI, RAG with Joule, ABAP AI capabilities, and Joule in Build Work Zone and SAP Mobile Start.  

SAP also has a roadmap of features planned optimizing business logic, automating documentation, and enhancing data protection and AI compliance. Developers will also be able to build their own AI agents that are tailored to their specific needs. SAP also plans to provide features that will assist in the move to SAP S/4HANA Cloud including enhancements to analyze legacy code, provide code explanations, and suggest optimizations.

This announcement builds upon a series of AI-related capabilities that SAP has been releasing over the last year. These started at Sapphire, were expanded on at TechEd, and have continued into 2025. Many of these are targeted at streamlining development and making it easier for both low-code and pro-code developers in the SAP space to work more quickly and efficiently. While none of these are necessarily hugely significant by themselves, the combination of features that have been added over the last year is making a big difference in productivity for those that are leveraging these AI-related capabilities.
