Inriver and OrigoVero have signed a technology partnership that connects product information governed in Inriver with OrigoVero’s unit-level Digital Product Passport platform. The companies say the integration is designed to let brands use existing product records as the source for passports tied to individual physical items, with OrigoVero adding unit-level identity, verification, and chain-of-custody information.
Inriver provides product information management software used to organize, govern, and distribute product data, while OrigoVero extends that information to individual products through QR and NFC-based verification and blockchain-recorded custody events.
Connecting Governed PIM Data to Unit-Level Passports
Edmondo Grigolato, OrigoVero’s co-founder and CEO, said, “Together, we will take the product story that lives in the PIM all the way to the shelf, the scanner, and the person holding the product.” That reflects the division of labor behind the partnership: Inriver provides product information management software used to organize, govern, and distribute product data across large catalogs.
OrigoVero describes each physical unit as receiving its own tamper-evident digital identity. Sustainability information and certifications associated with that identity can be recorded on a blockchain, while QR codes and NFC tags connect the item to its digital record.
Once a product enters the supply chain, OrigoVero can record custody events as logistics partners receive, store, and dispatch the item, creating a history of who handled it and when. The company also provides APIs and webhooks that can connect passport and custody events with ERP, warehouse management, and other enterprise systems.
For SAP customers, the product record can originate further upstream in ERP before moving into PIM for enrichment and governance. The partnership adds another potential downstream use for that governed information: a passport that connects product attributes maintained across enterprise systems with the identity and history of an individual physical item.
Why Traceability and DPP Compliance Are the Stakes
The companies describe the practical benefit as a shorter path from product data brands already maintain to consumer-facing passports as organizations prepare for requirements under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, or ESPR, the EU Battery Regulation, and other product-specific rules.
OrigoVero states that consumers can scan a product with a smartphone without installing an app and view information about the item’s journey, sustainability credentials, and authenticity. Its platform combines QR and NFC-based verification with a blockchain record designed to preserve product and custody events over time. The unit-level identity, blockchain record, and combined QR and NFC verification are features of OrigoVero’s implementation rather than universal requirements of the EU Digital Product Passport framework.
The platform can also associate environmental information such as temperature and humidity with products moving through controlled supply chains, adding operational data to the record carried alongside an individual unit.
The level at which a passport must be created can vary by product category, including model, batch, or individual-item level. OrigoVero’s unit-level approach therefore adds a degree of granularity that can support traceability and authentication beyond the broader product record typically governed in a PIM system.
What This Means for SAPinsiders
- PIM data can become the foundation for unit-level passports. Teams maintaining product information in Inriver should determine which governed attributes flow into a Digital Product Passport and which unit-specific identity, verification, and custody data remains in the downstream passport platform.
- DPP granularity should be part of vendor evaluation. Organizations should determine whether applicable requirements call for product information at model, batch, or individual-item level, and whether unit-level identity provides additional traceability or anti-counterfeiting value beyond the regulatory requirement.
- Compliance ownership may need explicit assignment. As product-specific ESPR requirements roll out and battery passport requirements take effect, organizations should establish who owns the governed product attributes and who owns the unit-level identity, verification, and custody data.
