SAP Cloud Platform
SAP Cloud Platform: An Overview and Key Considerations
What Is the SAP Cloud Platform?
The SAP Cloud Platform was a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering that provided an environment for developing and running cloud applications that leveraged SAP solutions. As part of the SAP HANA Cloud portfolio when it was released in 2012, it became the SAP HANA Cloud Platform in 2013, and SAP Cloud Platform in 2017. SAP Cloud Platform initially was available only in SAP-hosted data centers, but later was made available on multiple environments via the Cloud Foundry open-source cloud platform. Capabilities and services that were offered as part of SAP Cloud Platform included:
- Analytics
- Business services
- Collaboration
- Data and storage
- Integration
- Internet of Things
- Mobile
- Runtime environments
- Security
- User experience
In 2021, SAP Cloud Platform was officially removed as a stand-alone offering from SAP and is now one of the core components of the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). SAP Cloud Platform capabilities for application development and integration are now available as cloud services that run on SAP BTP.

Key Considerations for SAPinsiders
- SAP Cloud Platform is the basis for integrating data and applications in the cloud. Whether integration included SAP or non-SAP applications, the SAP Cloud Platform Integration Suite (now the SAP Integration Suite, part of the SAP Business Technology Platform) provided for integration of on-premise and cloud-based applications and data. This video by Craig Stasila, Global Go-to-Market Lead for SAP Platform, explains SAP’s strategy for how to connect the components of your intelligent enterprise.
- SAP Cloud Platform was designed as the means via which organizations could create extensions for SAP S/4HANA without needing to create and maintain custom code. One of the main goals of many organizations moving to SAP S/4HANA is to remove much of the custom code that made upgrading and maintaining their older ERP systems complex and expensive. To achieve this clean core, SAP Cloud Platform provided the capability for organizations to create application extensions using ABAP or their choice of programming language. Reddy Venumbaka explains how SAP S/4HANA can be extended and integrated using SAP Cloud Platform, and now SAP Business Technology Platform, in this event session.
As digital trends spur companies toward technologies that enable greater efficiencies and ease of use, user interfaces (UIs) have become integral to this pursuit. An intuitive UI is a critical part of innovation, as simplicity in the user experience frees up time and allows end users to be more flexible in how they work. Discover how you can leverage simple and intuitive user experiences in SAP Cloud Platform to drive meaningful innovation in your organization.
Every year, 500,000 women worldwide are newly diagnosed with cervical cancer. To help prevent this disease, Heidelberg University Hospital developed a project using a biomarker that would help determine if a woman infected with HPV was at risk for developing cancer, enabling early, life-saving treatment for that woman. But reaching women in developing countries to screen them for cancer was a challenge. Learn how Heidelberg University Hospital, in conjunction with SAP’s Design and Co-Innovation Center, built a mobile app on SAP Cloud Platform that enabled the research group to test underprivileged women for cancer and, ultimately, save lives.
With demand quickly exceeding the distribution model, headphone manufacturer Skullcandy synced up with SAP to better manage explosive growth in the niche market of lifestyle and performance. By implementing SAP Business ByDesign, Skullcandy replaced its manual spreadsheet-based system with a fully automated process to efficiently manage orders from purchase through delivery.
