If your company uses Employee Self-Service (ESS), you may not want employees to be able to maintain certain infotypes or subtypes. For example, if employees’ work addresses are only updated by HR specialists, you should remove the work address subtype from the subtype selection box on the ESS screen.

If you want to exclude infotypes or subtypes from being maintained via ESS by an employee, you can customize V_T591A_ESSEX using transaction SM30 or IMG menu path Personnel Management>Employee Self-Service> ESS Settings for Specific Services> Personal Information>Personal Information (ESS): Determine Subtypes (Figure 1). When you deactivate an infotype on V_T591A_ ESSEX by clicking on the Deact box, it no longer appears in ESS in the selection list of subtypes. However, be aware that it is not country-dependent, so if you deactivate the infotype for ESS, it is deactivated for all countries using ESS.
