Process automation technologies have evolved into strategic solutions in the last few years. Process visibility and employee productivity are increasingly becoming key objectives for deploying automation solutions in contrast to the earlier focus on cost reduction. SAPinsider has been publishing process automation benchmark research reports since 2020 to understand the perspectives of the community in this critical technology area. Continuing the trend, SAPinsider surveyed 133 members of its community during March and April 2023 on the topic.

The adaption percentage of robotics process automation (RPA) platforms increased in 2023 (Figure 1) compared to 2022. However, the adoption increase rate was slightly lower. This makes sense, as the technology adoption rate slows down as organizations mature in that technology. As evident from the survey responses, organizations have started touching the top of the maturity curve for automation solutions, which explains the declining adoption rate.

Process Automation

Finance-related processes have been the focus of most automation initiatives, as the initial focus is removing manual touchpoints and eliminating headcount. This is evident from the automation progress reported by SAPinsiders, which shows that finance-related processes dominate in processes that are more than 50% automated in the current state (Figure 2).

Process Automation

Human Resources (HR) emerged as the most automated process this year, indicating that organizations intend to leverage digital tools to address their talent challenges. As far as the future state focus is concerned, supply chain-related processes again emerged among the top focus areas for automation in 2023, in addition to finance-related processes. This aligns with the top requirement of building process automation capabilities across functions, which SAPinsiders believe will help attain organizational agility. Respondents completed an online survey and provided feedback through customer interviews that questioned them on topics such as:

  • What key actions does your organization intend to take to execute your automation strategies?
  • What top automation tools will your organization invest in within the next 24 months?
  • What challenges is your organization encountering in building process automation capabilities?
