Roughly 80% of enterprise data sits in emails, contracts, call transcripts, and PDFs where traditional databases can’t touch it. For data leaders and practitioners, this isn’t just a “missed opportunity”—it’s a massive integration headache.
Most enterprises already have the raw material they need to make AI work. So why are so many AI initiatives failing to deliver? One major technical hurdle is that the most valuable context lives outside the structured systems that feed your models.
Emails, contracts, and clinical notes contain critical signals about customers, suppliers, and risk. Yet, this unstructured data rarely makes it into the governed data layers that feed AI models. Not because it lacks value, but because the engineering lift to connect, govern, and operationalize it alongside structured rows and columns has historically been too heavy.
As we rush to deploy agentic systems, this unstructured or “dark data” has emerged as a significant limitation. The organizations that succeed won’t be the ones with the best standalone models; they will be the ones that can feed those models a rich, real-time, 360-degree view of their business—one that includes the nuance trapped in documents.
Why “context” is difficult to code
The most important business activity happens in human language, not in fields and tables. A sales rep doesn’t think in dropdown menus; they narrate in call notes. A lawyer doesn’t draft contracts in schemas; they write clauses in PDFs.
For data teams, this has traditionally required a fragile patchwork of custom OCR scripts, regex parsers, and manual stewardship queues. You capture the transaction in your MDM or data warehouse, but the “why”—the nuance and intent—remains locked in a blob storage file, disconnected from the master record.
Ironically, the more “digital” enterprises become, the more of this unstructured debt they accumulate. AI models can read this data, but without a governed, connected framework, they lack the grounding to use it safely. They hallucinate because they are making decisions in a vacuum, without the entity-level context that structured data provides.
The evolution: from MDM to Context Intelligence
This challenge drives the natural evolution of Reltio’s platform. We began by reinventing Master Data Management (MDM) as a cloud-native capability, giving enterprises trusted, real-time single sources of truth for their core entities. We also expanded MDM into data unification, allowing our customers to bring transactions, interactions, and dynamic relationships into those profiles.
Now, we are entering the era of Context Intelligence.
To ensure Agentic AI initiatives are successful, enterprises need more than just a “System of Record”; they need a “System of Context.” AI agents cannot operate effectively on structured data alone—they require the full story. By integrating unstructured data directly into the core data foundation, we are significantly expanding the trusted 360-degree profile. Context Intelligence unifies the “who” and “what” (structured data) with the “why” and “how” (unstructured data), providing the comprehensive fuel that autonomous agents need to make accurate, governed decisions.
Enter Reltio Unstructured Data Studio™
To deliver on this promise of Context Intelligence, we built Reltio Unstructured Data Studio™ (currently in early access, soon to be released as general availability).
This capability allows data teams to bypass the fragility of custom extraction pipelines. Instead of treating documents as static artifacts, you can now automatically extract entities—people, organizations, products—from unstructured sources and map them directly to the Reltio Intelligent Data Graph™.
Here is how it changes the workflow for data practitioners:
- Automated extraction and mapping: Using LLM-powered extraction, the system identifies critical signals buried in files and automatically maps them to the right entities and relationships in your data model. You aren’t just indexing text; you are attributing it to a specific Customer ID or Product SKU.
- Full lineage and governance: For regulated industries, “black box” extraction isn’t enough. Reltio maintains full lineage back to the source document. Every extracted attribute is traceable, audit-ready, and subject to the same governance policies as your structured data.
Flexible execution: Teams can schedule batch processing for high-volume ingestion or run on-demand via UI or APIs. This flexibility means you can integrate document processing directly into your existing data pipelines without standing up separate infrastructure.
Fueling RAG and AI Agents with high-fidelity context
The real payoff for architects is in the downstream consumption. When you merge unstructured data into an intelligent 360 profile, you solve the “context window” problem for AI.
With Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents can “look up” the facts they need. But standard RAG often retrieves chunks of text without understanding their relationships. By processing documents through Reltio, you give the AI a structured knowledge graph to traverse.
The AI doesn’t just find a contract; it understands which Supplier entity that contract belongs to, matches it against the Risk Score in the structured profile, and sees the Email History related to the negotiation.
The result: data that reflects reality
The result is a materially richer 360 profile. As more structured and unstructured signals are connected, your enterprise data finally reflects how the business actually operates—messy, human, and complex, but now governed and machine-readable.
The time to act is now
The AI agents and intelligent automation layers you are building today will only be as good as the data foundation beneath them. If that foundation is missing 80% of the relevant information because it’s hidden in PDFs, your AI investments will underdeliver.
Enterprises don’t need new data sources. The emails, documents, and reports already exist. The change is in how we architect the flow of that information. With Reltio Unstructured Data Studio, you can finally turn your document repositories into active, governed intelligence.
