Every process in the enterprise is legacy because it was designed for a world without AI. That is the thesis Camunda CEO Jakob Freund has put at the center of the company’s push into agentic orchestration, and it is the premise behind ProcessOS, the intelligence layer Camunda built on top of its agentic orchestration platform.

The company describes ProcessOS as software that discovers how processes actually run, re-engineers them for an AI-native world, and keeps improving them after deployment. Its target is not a single task or application. It is the end-to-end process layer where humans, systems, and AI agents need to coordinate work across the enterprise.

That is where the broader market is heading. At Sapphire 2026, SAP set out its Autonomous Enterprise vision, with SAP Business AI Platform, SAP Knowledge Graph, and Joule Studio providing the context and development layer for agentic workflows inside the SAP landscape. ProcessOS Brings Agentic Re-Engineering to Enterprise Processes

ProcessOS is currently available in early access for selected enterprises. Camunda is positioning the product for organizations that have already found the limits of isolated AI agents and now need a governed way to redesign high-value processes across departments, systems, and human approval points.

It runs four AI agents across the process lifecycle: a Discover agent maps how work happens; a Design agent rebuilds the process around AI; a Build agent generates the assets needed to deploy the process; an Optimize agent tunes performance after launch.

Camunda frames ProcessOS as re-engineering. The product is not only looking for steps to accelerate. It is asking whether the step should exist, whether a human still needs to perform it, and where an AI agent can act under governed conditions.

“You describe the desired outcome in natural language, and then ProcessOS creates the process, deploys it, and continuously optimizes it based on the business outcomes you defined,” said Daniel Meyer, Camunda’s chief technology officer.

The output includes process models, decision logic, integrations, data mapping, agent prompts, and user interface forms. It produces the structure of the process: how work moves, rules that guide decisions, which systems connect, and how agents act.

Camunda tested the approach on its own Quote-to-Cash process before launch. The company reports that re-engineering cut cycle time from 115 days to 80 days, reduced manual touchpoints from as many as 80 per contract to two or three, lowered post-process error rates by about 80%, and freed roughly 6,000 person-hours a year.

ProcessOS Extends Orchestration Across SAP and Non-SAP Systems

Camunda designed ProcessOS to work with the enterprise systems companies already run, including ERP, CRM, core banking, and claims platforms. That makes the product most relevant in processes that do not begin and end inside one application.

SAP-heavy enterprises often operate that way. A quote-to-cash, procure-to-pay, claims, onboarding, or service process may touch SAP for financial or operational execution, another system for customer or supplier data, and additional tools for approvals, documents, exceptions, or compliance checks.

Camunda’s value proposition sits in that cross-system layer. ProcessOS gives enterprises a way to model, redesign, and govern the full process even when the work moves across SAP and non-SAP systems. Instead of asking one application to own the whole workflow, ProcessOS serves as the coordination layer around the systems of record.

SAP is advancing a different but related model. Camunda is also making governance part of the ProcessOS value proposition. ProcessOS does not send agentic process changes straight into production. Camunda says every modification goes through human review before deployment, giving business and IT teams a control point before AI-designed workflows affect live operations.

This is especially important when work moves across SAP and non-SAP systems. Governance inside one application can control what happens inside that application. A neutral orchestration layer can govern the full process path, including the points where work moves between systems and responsibility shifts from one team to another.

SAP’s embedded-agent strategy makes a parallel governance argument inside the suite, while Camunda’s case is strongest where the process crosses system boundaries.
