SAP Cloud Migration

SAP cloud migration has shifted from a compliance exercise to a strategic inflection point. With mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ending in December 2027, the window for deliberate migration planning is narrowing quickly, and demand for implementation partners is outpacing available supply. The conversation has moved well beyond the deadline. Access to generative AI through SAP Joule, clean-core architecture, and SAP Cloud ERP Private is now reshaping how organizations build business cases and justify transformation investments. SAPinsider tracks how organizations across industries and geographies approach and execute SAP cloud migration projects.

What Is SAP Cloud Migration?

SAP cloud migration is the process of moving SAP workloads, including ERP systems, databases, and integrations, from on-premise or legacy environments to cloud-based infrastructure. Destinations include SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (formerly RISE with SAP), and managed deployments on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Modern SAP cloud migrations go far beyond infrastructure lift-and-shift: they require architecture redesign, custom code remediation, clean-core implementation, data cleansing, change management, and integration of both SAP and non-SAP systems across hybrid and multi-cloud landscapes. Security, cost governance, and compliance readiness are equally critical considerations for every migration program.

ERP Migration and Transformation 2026

SAPinsider benchmark research found 55% of organizations report deploying SAP S/4HANA or SAP S/4HANA Cloud, yet only 34% have fully completed the transition. For the first time, SAP AI announcements (43%) outpaced the 2027 end-of-maintenance deadline (38%) as the top external driver.

RISE with SAP 2025

SAPinsider benchmark research found that smaller organizations (under $2 billion in revenue) are twice as likely to be live on SAP Cloud ERP Private as larger enterprises. Cost and unclear business value are the top barriers, and an impending shortage of skilled implementation resources poses risk as migrations accelerate.

SAP S/4HANA Migration 2025

SAPinsider benchmark research (2025) found 32% of organizations have already transitioned to SAP S/4HANA, a 10-percentage-point jump from 2024. Another 27% are in active implementation. The end-of-maintenance deadline remains the most important factor driving migration, cited by 57% of respondents.

Cloud Innovation and TransformationAs organizations update their systems and infrastructure to build a platform for future innovation, many are looking at the cloud to help them achieve these goals. Their goals behind these plans, as we saw in research on How Business Leaders are Scaling Platforms and Innovation, are an ability to support new business models, improved analytics, and an ability to adopt and support cloud applications more effectively. These cloud applications and services can be the most important part of any plan for innovation. Between the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and services offered by the hyperscalers, organizations have multiple options to establish a platform for innovation and transformation. While many already have transformation plans in progress that start with updating systems and infrastructure. Next comes redesigning and re-engineering business processes to meet today’s needs. But just as important is the need to innovate. This is more complex than transformation because it is not as simple as updating a process or replacing hardware. In fact, focusing on trying to build innovation into an organization can sometimes be counterproductive.
