Key Considerations for SAPinsiders

  • An overview of the SAP Business Technology Platform. Dave Maloney, SAP’s North American VP for the Business Technology Platform, outlines the solution and why it is important. More than just a wrapper around a list of different technologies, Maloney says the SAP BTP offers content, consistency, and continuity. It also makes the move to the cloud far less risky, Maloney explains, and improves total cost of ownership. Watch the short video and learn more about SAP BTP.
  • Business centricity, completeness, and openness are what makes SAP BTP unique. Dan Kearnan, SAP’s Senior Director of Product Marketing, explains that the SAP Business Technology Platform helps address customer challenges by being an integrated portfolio of technologies. But what makes it unique is the business centricity of the offering, the completeness of the portfolio, and the open architecture that exists. Kearnan’s complete interview covers current technology shifts, current challenges, solutions included, and these unique differentiators of SAP BTP.
  • Explore how SAP BTP supports a multi-cloud strategy. One of SAP’s key statements about the SAP Business Technology Platform is that it can run in any cloud or hybrid environment. Turning that marketing message into reality can be accomplished though, as James Wood, Principal Consulting of Bowdark Consulting, points out. And it’s done using the openness that Kearnan listed as one of the things that makes SAP BTP unique. In his article on embracing a multi-cloud strategy with SAP BTP, Wood explores the solution, running it on hyperscalers, and using Cloud Foundry and Kyma. He believes that we are now “able to witness the culmination of a multi-year journey towards openness.” This is worth exploring for your own cloud strategy.

SAP Announces Sunset of Neo Cloud EnvironmentJul 10, 2023  —  In June 2023 SAP announced that it would sunset the “Neo” cloud environment on December 31, 2028, subject to the terms of customer or partner contracts.  While this will certainly impact many customers still running cloud applications on SAP-hosted infrastructure, the multi-cloud foundation for SAP BTP has been the default environment for new customers since 2020. This environment provides a choice of different infrastructure options, runtimes, and environments for SAP BTP services as well the Cloud Foundry, ABAP, and Kyma environments. Given that all new customers are using the multi-cloud foundation for SAP BTP, the decision was made to sunset Neo. SAP will continue to add security updates, availability, and compliance standards for those customers continuing to use the Neo environment. However, new features and innovations will only be available in the multi-cloud foundation for SAP BTP. This includes updates for SAP Integration Suite, SAP Build, and SAP Datasphere. Existing SAP customers can continue to use the Neo environment until the end of December 2028, though SAP will be working with customers to assist in their move from that environment. SAP plans to provide support for migrations from the Neo environment including best practice documentation for migration projects, and guidance to help minimize migration costs. SAP is encouraging organizations that are currently using the Neo environment to familiarize themselves with the multi-cloud foundation for SAP BTP. SAP also recommends that all customers and partners plan their move to the multi-cloud foundation for SAP BTP well ahead of the official sunset date. Customers with existing contracts for the Neo environment will be permitted to renew or restructure those contracts as long as the new contract term does not exceed the end-of-life date. SAP explicitly states that there will be no approval for a renewal or extension beyond the end of 2028. SAP is offering a free migration assessment service to help partners that have solutions running on the SAP BTP, Neo environment that will help them understand how to plan and migrate their solution to the multi-cloud foundation for SAP BTP. Impact on SAPinsiders Organizations that have been using SAP BTP, or its predecessor products, for more than just a couple of years should verify which environment their services are using. If they are running on the SAP BTP, Neo environment then plans should start being made to transition to the multi-cloud platform for SAP BTP. This is especially true for anyone leveraging SAP Integration Suite, SAP Build, or SAP Datasphere. New features and innovations in those solutions will only be available in the multi-cloud environment for SAP BTP. SAP has published a FAQ answering important questions around the sunset of the Neo environment. It is recommended that anyone using the Neo environment leverage the document, as well as the links in it, to learn more about the change and where to find resources that can assist with migration.

SAP and Visa Collaborate to Digitize B2B Payments for Asia-Pacific EnterprisesJun 28, 2023  —  SAP and Visa have formed a strategic partnership to simplify and expedite business-to-business (B2B) payments in the Asia-Pacific region. The collaboration aims to integrate payments into the SAP environment through the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) to accelerate the digitization of B2B payments in supply chains. The joint venture will introduce a user-friendly B2B payment solution for SAP customers, particularly benefiting smaller businesses that struggle with digitizing payment acceptance or processing commercial card payments. The platform will automate payments, enhancing procurement efficiency and enabling secure payments with minimal effort. Businesses will be able to make immediate payments on SAP software platforms using Visa corporate cards, eliminating the need for navigating multiple payment methods. The goal is to streamline B2B payments, freeing up time and resources for other business areas. SAP BTP will serve as a secure hub, addressing working capital shortages in the supply chain. Visa will utilize SAP BTP to channel commercial payments to all suppliers, regardless of their acceptance of card payments. This will enable businesses to make payments easily and leverage cardholder privileges both locally and internationally. The initiative aims to replace manual payment methods like cash and checks, thereby streamlining transactions and improving cash flow for payers and suppliers alike.
