A Secure IT Future for Hilti with Microsoft Azure and RISE with SAPHilti, a leading supplier in the construction industry, transitioned to RISE with SAP on Azure, closing its own datacenter. This move, carried out between October 2021 and July 2022 in three phases, improved cybersecurity, resilience, and cloud computing benefits. The migration was managed with the expertise of Microsoft and SAP, involving integration and migration of complex system landscapes. As part of this upgrade, Hilti also launched the Nuron platform, a 22-volt power tool ecosystem, and doubled its SAP S/4HANA capacity to 24 TB to meet increased demands and support business growth despite a global supply crisis.
Hilti worked closely with Microsoft's leadership and technical teams, utilizing resources like FastTrack for Azure and the Microsoft Global Black Belt team to achieve these milestones. This strategic shift allowed Hilti to reallocate experts and resources more effectively, making a significant immediate business impact. Additionally, Hilti plans to upgrade its SAP landscape biennially to maintain security and resilience, leveraging Microsoft and SAP’s cybersecurity advancements to safeguard against threats.

Essential for the company, says Barry Carney, Senior Director of Global Business Services, is keeping pace with innovations as they happen. To balance its complex SAP landscape with its ambition to develop an enterprise system of the future and provide first-rate service to architectural engineers around the world with its innovative software products, Bentley is building a business case for SAP S/4HANA. A cloud-first strategy is also driving Bentley forward, hosting its SAP footprint on Microsoft Azure.
Carney’s team is responsible for the front- and back-office applications that support the business, including all the integrations and customer applications that Bentley employees use to run the business — from order-to-cash to reconciliation.
Carney’s team on the architecture development and integration side glue all of Bentley’s systems and applications together, he says.
“We're structured to support our business, our customer and user facing operations and our internal colleague facing operations.”
The team is taking a deliberate approach to its SAP S/4HANA roadmap to ensure its complex, integrated, highly customized system is well tuned to keep pace with change and positioned to seize market opportunities as they arise.
