Many SAP customers are rethinking their financial planning and analysis (FP&A) strategy—and for good reason. As legacy tools like SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC) age out, organizations are seeking modern, agile platforms that can integrate real-time data and scale with business needs. At the SAPinsider Las Vegas 2025 conference, Protiviti shared how a major U.S. retailer made that shift, migrating from BPC to SAP Analytics Cloud Planning (SACP) as part of a broader SAP S/4HANA transformation. With over 500 reports, 90+ users, and more than a decade of historical data to move, this wasn’t a simple lift and shift. Instead, the company used the project to streamline its FP&A processes, improve inventory and sales alignment, and reduce reporting complexity—without disrupting operations. The result was a scalable, cloud-native planning environment designed for the future.

Why SAP Users Are Moving Away from BPC

Originally built on Microsoft technologies and later acquired by SAP in 2007, BPC has been a mainstay in enterprise performance management for nearly two decades. But as systems evolved and cloud capabilities matured, BPC’s rigid architecture began to limit flexibility and innovation. SAP Analytics Cloud Planning, introduced in 2015, was designed to solve these problems. While early versions lacked feature parity, SACP has since surpassed BPC in functionality, offering integrated planning, forecasting, reporting, and predictive analytics—all in a single, cloud-based platform. The business case is now clear: the question is not if but when and how to transition.

A Structured Migration Approach: From ECC and BW to S/4HANA and SACP

The Protiviti-led migration involved two legacy BPC models—finance and sales margin—moved onto SACP alongside the client’s transition to S/4HANA. The scope included:

Replacing all existing planning and reporting functionality

Migrating 10+ years of data

Supporting monthly close, forecasting, and annual planning

Integrating with SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP)

Aligning inventory processes with sales targets

Rebuilding With Purpose: Streamlining Reports and Models

The project began with a blueprint phase, not to replicate old systems, but to refine them. Reports were rationalized, obsolete calculations were eliminated, and only value-adding structures were retained. Custom CDS views and Protiviti-developed accelerators helped move large data volumes into new SACP models for finance, margin, inventory, and purchasing.

Driving Adoption Through Empowered Users

During the build and train phase, business users weren’t just trained, they were hands-on contributors. Power users created over half of the replacement reports, gaining early familiarity with tools like:

Data actions and multi-actions

Scenario modeling

Custom dashboards and visualizations

Comprehensive training focused on reducing Excel dependency while still offering flexibility for specific team needs.

Deployment and Hypercare: Ensuring Business Continuity

Final deployment involved mapping and loading data from BPC into SACP, followed by a hypercare period to stabilize the system and resolve early issues. Internal teams received the tools and support they needed to own the new environment moving forward.

Shifting from SAP BPC to SAP Analytics Cloud Planning (SACP) isn’t simply a tool replacement—it’s an opportunity to modernize financial processes, eliminate technical debt, and align planning with real-time operational data in S/4HANA. Invest early in user enablement and change management. Empowering business users to own reporting and planning capabilities in SACP was a critical success factor in this project. Comprehensive training and involving users from the build phase onward reduced resistance, accelerated adoption, and improved report quality. Prioritizing user readiness helps ensure the new platform delivers measurable business impact. Leverage integration to drive real-time insights and agility. By integrating SACP with core SAP applications—especially S/4HANA and SAP Integrated Business Planning—companies can unify financial and operational planning, streamline processes, and gain real-time visibility. This enables more agile decision-making and creates a foundation for adopting advanced analytics and automation capabilities in the future.
