Here’s something that comes up in almost every conversation with SAP CoE leads.

The testing framework is in place. Tricentis Tosca is running. Automation coverage is growing. The CoE has done the hard work of getting the organization to take SAP testing seriously.

And then someone asks where the test data is coming from.

The answer is usually some version of: the team is working on it. It takes a few days. There’s a refresh scheduled for next week. The environments will be ready by Thursday.

Why SAP CoE test data can’t keep up with continuous testing

Continuous testing in SAP means the ability to run regression, integration, and process validation cycles as frequently as the program or release schedule demands. After every transport. After every configuration change. As part of a regular release cadence rather than a quarterly event.

The test data layer needs to support that cadence. Right now, for most CoEs, it doesn’t.

The reasons are familiar. A system refresh in SAP involves configuration validation, masking, user management, and integration checks. It requires coordination across Basis, infrastructure, and QA. It takes days. And by the time it’s done, something has changed in the system and the environment is already partially out of date.

On top of that, SAP customers on a yearly QA refresh cycle spend nine months testing against data that is more than three months old. For a CoE trying to run frequent regression cycles, that’s a fundamental problem. The automation is ready. The data isn’t.

The word continuous gets used a lot. In this context, it means something specific.

Test data that is available when a testing cycle starts, not when the preparation process finishes.
