Lenovo Brings Cloud Consumption to Customer-Controlled SAP S/4HANA Infrastructure

As the 2027 end of mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 approaches, customers still running those applications must decide not only when to move to SAP S/4HANA, but also where the new environment will run.

Public cloud is one option. Other organizations need to keep mission-critical SAP systems in their own facilities because of data sovereignty, regulatory requirements, application dependencies, risk policies, or limited regional cloud availability.

Lenovo has structured its SAP portfolio around those different requirements. Its options range from customer-owned infrastructure and managed services to pay-per-use Lenovo TruScale systems and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition deployed inside the customer’s data center.

Five Models Separate Control From Consumption

Lenovo outlines five deployment models for SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Suite. The first is a self-managed capital expenditure purchase. A second combines customer-owned infrastructure with Lenovo-managed SAP HANA services, shifting monitoring and systems management without changing where the hardware sits.

TruScale Infrastructure as a Service adds a third path. Lenovo installs infrastructure on premises, charges through a subscription-based, pay-for-use model, and provides lifecycle services spanning capacity planning, deployment, management, and asset removal. The company says business-critical data remains behind the customer’s firewall, supporting organizations that must keep SAP data on site.

The remaining models expand the cloud options. Lenovo offers a hybrid cloud arrangement with Microsoft Azure. SAP also sells the customer data center option for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, which is built on TruScale and combines SAP cloud management with Lenovo infrastructure inside the customer’s facility.

Certified Systems Anchor the Deployment Choice

Lenovo supports these models with ThinkSystem servers and ThinkAgile hyperconverged infrastructure for data center and edge locations. Lenovo recommends the ThinkSystem SR650 V4 and SR665 V3 for core SAP workloads in enterprise data centers. It also offers ThinkEdge systems for factories, warehouses, and other remote sites that need to process operational data locally before sending it to central SAP applications.

Customers can run SAP HANA on a preconfigured appliance or build the system from SAP-certified servers and storage. The second approach, called tailored data center integration, lets infrastructure teams use components that fit their existing data center standards.

The Infrastructure Decision Becomes an Operating-Model Decision

Lenovo’s portfolio expands the choices available to SAP S/4HANA customers.

Organizations that keep SAP systems in their own data centers do not have to manage and finance the infrastructure in the traditional way. They can buy the hardware and have Lenovo manage it, or use TruScale to pay for on-site capacity as a service instead of purchasing the equipment upfront.

Customers that want a cloud model also have more than one path. Lenovo supports hybrid deployments connected to Microsoft Azure, while SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition can be delivered as an SAP-managed service on Lenovo TruScale infrastructure located inside the customer’s own data center.

The decision is therefore not limited to public cloud or on premises. SAP leaders must also decide who owns the hardware, who pays for it, who manages it, and where it will run.

What This Means for SAPinsiders

• Procurement becomes an architecture decision. Separating ownership, payment, management, and location turns infrastructure contracts into long-term operating-model commitments. Architecture, security, finance, and procurement teams must therefore evaluate deployment choices together rather than sequentially.
• Consumption pricing creates new planning risks. TruScale reduces upfront investment, but it makes usage forecasts, capacity thresholds, and contract terms more important. SAP teams must scrutinize scaling charges and exit conditions as closely as server performance.
• Cloud migration becomes a control continuum. An SAP-managed service inside a customer facility creates an intermediate position between conventional on-premises infrastructure and public cloud. Regulated enterprises can modernize operations before changing where sensitive data resides.
